What are Stem Cells?
If you watch the news at all, you have probably run across the term "stem cell," but like many Americans you may be wondering, "What are stem cells?"
People talk about stems cells, adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells, and stem cell therapy ... but few people slow down to actually define "What are stem cells?" As a nutritional counselor and a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I get this question all the time. So let's define the what and wherefores of stem cells.
What are Stems Cells -- The Two Types
There are two basic types of stem cells: embryonic and adult. While controversy surrounds the use of embryonic stem cells, no such debate exists with the use of adult stem cells, which our own bodies naturally produce all the time (though this occurs less and less as we age). All stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods of time, and they can give rise to specialized cells.
According to the National Institutes of Health, stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. This is why stem cells are such a hot topic. Since a stem cell can become literally almost any other type of cell, the stem cell has huge potential when it comes to repairing and rejuvenating damaged or aging parts of our bodies.
When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, a skin cell, etc. When released, new stem cells migrate to the areas of the body where they are needed most as we grow older. Serving as a repair system for the body, stem cells can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as a person or animal is alive.
The Stem Cells Our Bodies Naturally Produce
The stem cells that our bodies naturally produce are called adult stem cells. These stem cells produce over 30 types of growth factors and tissue chemicals. Our naturally-occurring stem cells also help recruit other local and systemic stem cells to focus on repairing damaged tissue. They are also active in immune modulation to promote or suppress T-cell function. In short, stems cells are pretty nifty tools to have and the more stem cells you have the healthier you are. Best of all, when you focus on boosting your own stem cells instead of using someone else's, you don't run into all those stem cell research issues.
The problem with stem cells occurs as we age. As we get older, our bodies decrease the number of stem cells produced right when we need them most. The solution to this problem is to eat foods and take supplements that support stem cell production and longevity in our bodies. For instance, many substances found in nature can support stem-cell production. These include green tea extract, wild blueberry, carnosine, blueberry extract, vitamin D, and blue-green algae. These ingredients give your stem cells the proper nutrition so that not only do they multiply but they can better protect and repair your body. But don't worry, you don't have to go around squeezing wild blueberries into your green tea to get these beneficial effects. Nutritional products now available on the market package all of these ingredients into a simple daily supplement so that stem cell nutrition is simple. Specifically, this supplement:

Belly Fat: What You May Not Know plus Natural Solutions
There is more to be concerned about with belly fat than just how it looks on you. While it is true that your body needs some fat, it is also true that having too much of the fat we can see often means there is more of the fat we can't see. That is not good news for your health. The fat we can see, subcutaneous fat, accumulates just under the skin usually in the buttocks, hips, thighs, and abdominal areas. There is another kind of fat, visceral fat, that is around your vital organs such as liver, heart, lungs and digestive tract. This fat cushions the organs, but too much of it can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, colon cancer and other health conditions.
Body Shape
Since the amount of belly fat can be an indication of how much visceral fat you have, take a look at your body shape. Having what is called a "pear" shaped body is better than having what is called an "apple" shape. The apple shape means that you have a bigger waistline with a round belly and the fat has settled there. If you have a pear shape then the fat has settled more in your thigh and buttocks areas. Having more fat in the abdomen area can be an indication of more visceral fat. Genetics can play a role in the propensity to store visceral fat, but physical activity also plays a role. So for those of us that are apple shapes it means it's time to get serious about getting a physical exercise plan going and making changes in the types of foods we eat.
How to Control Belly Fat
Belly fat breaks down into fatty acids, which goes into the liver and muscles. When this happens, more 'bad' cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides result. This causes insulin to be less effective in controlling blood sugar, and results in insulin resistance. Blood sugar then can be out of balance and fat and clots appear in the bloodstream. Watching your intake of sugar and processed carbohydrates is therefore important in your diet. Eliminating processed foods from the diet and moving to eating whole foods, mostly plant based, rich in enzymes and antioxidants, and not overeating can go a long way to controlling belly fat. The main ways to get a grip on your belly fat are through diet, exercise, enough quality sleep and managing stress.
Belly fat is also caused by undigested food sitting there because your body doesn't have enough enzymes to digest it. This can be due to the type of calories we are ingesting, like carbs and fat, or to the way we eat meals. If we allow ourselves to get hungry, our bodies go into starvation mode and hoard the calories. This causes a feeling of being deprived and craving comfort foods which are not usually the healthiest foods. Eating more, smaller meals throughout the day allows us to avoid this state and avoid the cravings for unhealthy foods. A healthy snack alternative for a small meal is a bar fortified with sprouted grains, greens, and blue green algae that provides a complete protein and all essential amino acids source.
Nutritional Support to Control Belly Fat
Enzymes to Control Belly Fat
Cooked foods don't have enzymes because high temperatures literally kill the enzymes naturally found in foods. Canned foods also lack enzymes and often over-stimulate the endocrine system. One study found that laboratory rats fed a diet of processed and enzyme-less protein, fats, and carbohydrates increased their percentage of body fat (V. Korenchevsky, "Pathology and Bacteriology").
Proper diet that has plenty of enzymes plus the raw materials the body needs to stay healthy (vitamins, minerals, trace-minerals, and antioxidants) does more to help weight loss than any diet plan. To practice enzyme therapy for weight loss, you need to start with a high-quality enzyme source that preferably contains mycopepsin, an enzyme that works well even in the very acidic environment of the stomach.
Water to Control Belly Fat
Another way to fight belly fat is to build lean muscle because muscle burns more calories than fat does and increases your metabolism which in turn burns fat away. One way to increase your metabolism to burn fat is by drinking enough water. Increasing metabolism to burn fat is the job of your liver. The liver however also takes over some of the jobs your kidneys should be doing and can't if the kidneys don't have enough water. That in turns slows the liver down from converting stored fat into energy. The average person needs to drink about 2 quarts of water a day. This of course should not be all at one time, but rather spread out throughout the day so as to not overtax the kidneys.
Belly Fat: The Bottom Line
The amount of belly fat you have can be an indication of the amount of visceral fat you have which can lead to numerous serious health conditions. Losing weight and ridding yourself of the belly fat through diet, sleep, stress management and exercise can lead to not only a better looking and feeling you, but also a healthier you.

- Fiber in the diet helps keep the visceral fat from building up. Proteins and fiber are less likely to be converted to fat storage as the body is able to eliminate any of those it can't digest.
- Avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates or calories that come from fat. Your body can only easily digest a certain amount of carbohydrates before it then converts those carbs to fat to store away.
- Adding a soy based smoothie drink to your diet gives you a protein alternative as a snack to help you stay away from fatty foods and satisfies hunger to combat overeating.
- Eat more protein and fewer carbs. The kind of protein that you eat can make a difference too. Studies have shown that eating dairy protein can result in loss of belly fat while at the same time gaining muscle. Another source of high quality protein that is just as good or even better than dairy protein is AFA blue green algae. This form of microalgae has 75% usable high quality protein compared to just 18% in red meat!
- Enzymes are required to properly digest food, and when we don't have enough enzymes, the food we eat literally rots in our guts, adding to weight gain and the appearance of a beer belly.

Have a Fitness Goal for the New Year? Simple Tips to Get You Started
Are you one of those that make a New Year's Resolution to eat healthier and start exercising, only to lose interest in your fitness goals by February? If so, you are not alone. The problem is that we all know we should eat better and exercise more, but the hustle and bustle of life interferes and we tend to let it go by the wayside. The good intention is there but just knowing something or being told by the doctor is not enough to get the motivation going. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults should get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week with activities like brisk walking, biking, jogging, or swimming, and strength-training sessions 2-3 times a week. (You should of course check with your health care practitioner before undertaking an exercise program especially if you have any specific health conditions.) Studies have shown that people need more information on actually how to fit exercise into their busy schedules instead of just the general advice that they should exercise more or that exercise is good for their health.
The type of exercise is not as important as being sure you are just doing it and doing it consistently. This is where the difficulty comes in for many people. Juggling work, family life, friends, community commitments and all the other things we do on a daily basis makes it easy to put off exercising and ignore our fitness goals. Here are some tips on how to make this year different and help achieve your fitness goals by working exercise into your everyday life.
Making a Fitness Plan
First while you are all fired up about your New Year's resolution, make a plan. Actually write down on paper a fitness goal plan with specific milestones that you can measure. Make those goals things that are achievable. Set it up in small steps so you can see your progress and reward yourself for each step you accomplish. Find the resources you need to be able to do the steps. Here's an example:
Goal: I will walk 2 miles a day.
Step 1: I will walk mile a day.
Plan: I will park in a parking space across the parking lot from the building I am going into each time I drive someplace (ie. work, store...)
Resources: Pedometer or cellphone app to measure my walking distance everyday.
Reward: Afternoon treat of a cup of fat free frozen yogurt.
Step 2: I will walk mile a day.
Plan: Continue parking far away and add I will get up from my desk at work 3 times a day and walk around the block.
Resources: An alarm on cellphone or clock that can be set for 3 specific times as a reminder it's time to walk.
Reward: Get a pedicure and facial at the neighborhood day spa.
And so on, you get the idea.
Plan to Keep Motivation Momentum
For some activities you may need to schedule them in just like you would a doctor's appointment or a meeting. If your fitness goal is a priority for you then isn't meeting your fitness goal and improving your health just as important as any other appointment or meeting you have on your calendar? Some people may find it helpful to keep a running log of their accomplishments. Seeing small daily improvements may motivate them to keep going. Others will find this to be just one more task to keep up with and not find it helpful. When you are making your plan though, consider those things that in the past have interfered with your exercising and make a contingency plan. For example, if you go to an exercise class or exercise at a gym and have to cancel to stay home with a sick child. You know this situation may occur, so write into your plan what you can do that will replace this activity. Maybe in this case you will find an exercise program on the television or internet and do that workout instead.
Some people also find getting a fitness partner helpful in keeping on task. Two people with similar fitness goals can help keep each other motivated and make them both more accountable for showing up for the scheduled exercise. Be creative and think about ways you can add in extra time doing physical activity around your environment and situation. I work at my desk at the computer for most of my work day. I have sticky notes with various exercises I have found through the internet and want to do each day stuck on a board in front of me. I find that if I set my cellphone alarm for every hour of the day, pick one of the sticky notes to do and then return to work, I get in a lot of exercises and feel better at the end of the day. Before I started this program, I would be stiff and drooping by the end of the day just sitting at a desk for several hours.
The Convenience Factor
Another thing to consider in your fitness goal plan is making your steps convenient. Don't set yourself up for activities that you know are going to be hard to accomplish. For example, don't set up going to an exercises class during your lunch break that is on the other side of town. You know something will come up at work that will make it impossible to get away on time and that you will end up skipping the class. Once you skip it one time it is easier to continue skipping class when it is not convenient. Instead look for activities that you can easily do within your time frames and situations like taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work, walking to your friends house instead of driving, walking your children to and from school instead of driving them in the car.
Healthy Eating for Exercise Support
Now that you have the exercise part of your fitness plan down, it's time to consider the healthy eating part. You need to fuel your body with the right nutrition to help you stick to your fitness plan. Add vitamin and mineral-dense foods to your diet. Drink plenty of water, especially during the winter. Antioxidants will also keep your body limber and flexible which makes exercising easier. Foods rich in antioxidants include berries, garlic, carrots, soy, and whole grains. If you can't get antioxidants on a regular basis in your diet, you can take pill-based supplements such vitamins E, C, and A (in the form of beta-carotene). Blue-green algae and spirulina also offer strong natural sources of antioxidant nutrition.
Here are some other food sources that will support the exercise portion of your fitness plan:
Make this New Year's health resolution the best ever by making it one that you can realistically accomplish and get you on the road to better health. With these simple tips and a little planning ahead you can start on the road to a healthier you!

Is Your Lifestyle Heart Healthy?
Do you practice heart healthy habits in your lifestyle? Many Americans don't as evidenced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics that around 600,000 people die of heart disease every year in the United States. The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease which is responsible for 385,000 deaths a year. This type of heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease or atherosclerosis, is the leading cause of heart attacks. Men typically get this disease earlier than women by about 10 years. It is thought that women receive some protection by having elevated levels of estrogen in their systems during their childbearing years.
Factors of Heart Disease
Factors that can contribute to heart disease include high cholesterol, nicotine from smoking, and high levels of glucose. As a result of these irritants, plaque builds up in the arteries in response to the lining of the arteries becoming inflamed. When the plaque becomes inflamed so much that it ruptures, a clot forms which blocks the artery and cuts off the flow of blood to the heart. This is known as a heart attack.
In the past there have been preventative measures suggested to reduce the risk of heart disease such as hormone therapy, low carbohydrate diet, high protein diet, Vitamin B supplements, and Vitamin E supplements. These are being found now to have no significant impact on reducing heart disease and in some cases can lead to other health concerns.
Prevention is the Best Medicine
The best prevention for heart disease is eating a diet high in Omega 3, low in trans fats and saturated fats, low in cholesterol, and high in fruits, vegetables and fiber. Stay away from fried and greasy foods, limit salt and alcohol consumption, exercise regularly and lower stress. Foods that have been shown to lower the risk of heart disease include fish such as herring, sardines, tuna, salmon and mackerel, and soy protein because it contains fiber, vitamins and minerals and has low levels of saturated fat. Also be aware of chemicals in your food like caffeine, MSG, and other food additives and avoid these. According to studies reported in the Doctors Health Press, when the body stops producing as much CoQ10 later in life, the results can lead to aging, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Supplementing your diet with coenzyme Q10 provides a natural form of support for the heart.
Stress
Stress is recognized as a contributor to heart disease as it creates a rise in blood pressure, increases the heart rate and causes a release of stress hormones. Learning to cope with stress is an important skill to develop to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started on a stress reduction program:
The earlier you get started on these heart healthy habits, the better your chances are of beating the statistics of developing heart disease. It's never too late and your heart will thank you for it.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started on a stress reduction program:
- Eat foods that contain magnesium
- Get enough B vitamins, especially B-12
- Chlorophyll can help you feel more vital and less stressed, which equals less emotional eating. Chlorophyll is found in highest concentrations in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, as well as wheat grass and blue-green algae.
- Learn to recognize situations and events that stress you out and avoid them if possible or come up with a plan of how to cope with them if you can't avoid them.
- Schedule times during the day to escape from the stress of everyday living. This might be times to meditate, read, or take a walk. Don't just say you'll do them, actually schedule them into your day like an appointment otherwise it is to easy to put off.
- Engage in physical activity. Bicycling, walking, a fun exercise dance class or any activity you find enjoyment doing. You may need to schedule these into your day or week too.
- Set boundaries. Be realistic about how much time you can devote to community organizations or family. Learn what your limits are before you become stressed and know when to stop committing to do things or when to ask for help.
- Get plenty of sleep. Lack of adequate sleep can increase the likelihood of being stressed.
The earlier you get started on these heart healthy habits, the better your chances are of beating the statistics of developing heart disease. It's never too late and your heart will thank you for it.

Did You Know That Lack of Sleep Can Cause Weight Gain? How to Avoid This!
Really, there are studies showing that a lack of sleep or lack of good quality sleep can contribute to weight gain. We live in a society that is increasingly becoming sleep deprived. According to the National Sleep Foundation, Americans getting 8 hours of sleep a night dropped from 35% to 26% in a 7 year period. So what does this lack of sleep have to do with weight gain?
Studies have been done showing a relationship between lack of sleep and increase in weight. There are basically two theories being put forth. One is that a lack of sleep causes you to have less energy to exercise and the second has to do with lack of sleep affecting hormones that control appetite. With these hormones out of whack, you go for high carb, high calorie foods.
Natural Solutions
Here are some suggestions for ways to get good quality sleep and thus keep off the associated weight gain.
Increased muscle tension and intrusive thoughts can interfere with sleep. Therefore, it is not surprising that techniques aimed at relaxing muscles (progressive muscle relaxation and biofeedback) and quieting the mind (meditation) have been found to be effective treatments for insomnia. Several studies show that regular meditation practice, either alone or as a part of yoga practice, results in higher blood levels of melatonin, an important regulator of sleep.
The quality of your sleep determines how refreshed you feel when you wake up in the morning, and how much energy you have during the day. Adding some probiotics, enzymes and blue green algae to your nightly regimen can really help you recharge while you sleep. Here's how they work to help your sleep.
Blue green algae:
Can support relaxation in the brain and allow you to get a peaceful night's rest. Take 1-2 capsules before bed.
Bifidus:
Bifidus is an important part of early childhood development, and strongly affects our self-esteem, confidence and sense of wholeness. Adding 2-4 bifidus capsules to your evening regimen can help you wake rested, confident and ready to charge into your day!
Enzymes:
While digestive enzymes certainly help us digest our food, on a metaphysical level, they can also help us digest and "work through" the knotty problems of the day. If you're facing a difficult situation or problem and need some solutions, take 2-4 enzymes before bed. Chances are that you will awaken with the needed solution!

Here are some suggestions for ways to get good quality sleep and thus keep off the associated weight gain.
- Cut caffeine out of your diet or at least don't consume caffeine too close to bedtime. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to 12 hours.
- Avoid alcohol before bedtime. Many people think drinking alcohol makes them sleepy, but it leads to increased waking up during the night and can interfere with the REM cycle causing sleep not to be quality.
- Use your bed only as a sleeping place. Avoid working or eating in bed. Using the bed solely as a place to sleep trains your body to prepare for that activity when going to bed.
- Make the bedroom as dark as possible. Also make it as quiet as you can. You may need to use an eye mask or ear plugs to accomplish this. Some people find using small earphone plugs with meditative music or nature sounds helpful.
- Develop a sleep routine and pattern to get the body trained for when it is time to sleep. Many people don't get the sleep their bodies' need during the work week and then sleep late on the weekends to "catch up" on their sleep. This doesn't really work though for good quality sleep because if you have spent the weekend sleeping late and then have to get up early Monday for work the pattern is thrown off. It is better to set up a routine for every day of the week of going to bed and getting up at the same times.
- Avoid exercising too close to bedtimes as this causes the body temperature to rise which is not conducive to going to sleep easily. It is better to do your exercise routines in the morning or early in the afternoon.
- Valerian root has been used successfully for some people to get to sleep easier and maintain a restful sleep overnight.
- Chamomile can also be a useful herb in relaxing the body before going to sleep. Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime can be part of establishing a nighttime routine and a signal to the body that it is time to start preparing for sleep.
- Meditation is helpful for some people to relax mind and body. Doing meditation before bedtime not only can help with relaxation, but can also become part of the nighttime routine that signals the body to prepare for sleep.

Need Healing? Thoughts and Natural Solutions
No matter how chronic or acute a condition is, it can be healed. There is always, always hope. If you're not dead yet, you're not dead yet. Whatever condition you suffer with and need healing for, make a resolution for the coming year to find three (the number of change) things that make you feel good. Then make the commitment to stick with them for the entire year. Doing this will make you an active participant in your own wellness program instead of a victim to your condition. That is an important distinction because we attract the same vibrations that we put out. Putting out positive energy attracts more positive energy whereas putting out victim energy attracts more victim energy. You may have to try several different things before settling on the 3 you will use in your recovery program towards achieving real health. You might explore different types of meditation, flower essences, herbs, supplements, lifestyle or diet changes, or various exercise programs.
Only you know what makes you feel good and what doesn't. If drinking plenty of water, taking certain supplements, or eating multiple small meals a day makes you feel better, then you are the only one that can know it. Similarly, you probably know which of your "bad" habits make you feel ill, like eating too much sugar or spending too much time at your desk. If you are not sure what makes you feel better or worse, keep a diary for seven to twenty-one days. Log your daily food intake, exercise, level of stress, amount of sleep, and anything else that might affect your level of health. Notice what happens when you add or vary any of your habits. Look at your diary to help you decide on the 3 changes you will make for this year. After you have picked your 3 changes, make the commitment to stick with them for the entire year.
Why stick with these changes for a year? Because if you have had your condition for any length of time, it takes at least one month of wellness for every year you have had your condition. So for example if you have had migraines for five years, you'll need at least 5 months of being on your recovery program, once you have one, to see improvement. Notice that the clock that counts the months toward recovery only starts ticking when you find a wellness regimen that works for you. This only works once you create a wellness program that works for you and that you can stick to. The three things you come up with for this year may be your wellness program or it may only be a beginning. There may be more to discover in settling on a complete wellness program that works for you and your condition.
Here are a few natural solutions for healthy living that may give you a place to start:
>> Drink lots of water. Every part of your body needs water. Water helps your body flush out anything unwanted, like toxins and viruses that might make you sick. If drinking straight water doesn't sound good to you, try adding a little salt or lime to you water. Both salt and lime improve the taste of water, and a slice of lime tends to remove any chlorine that might be in your water. You can also try brewing some tea or just drinking warm water with honey and lemon.
>>Take digestive enzymes. Especially now during the holiday season with lots of holiday meals (and sweets), office parties, neighborhood potlucks, and Christmas parties indigestion is a big possibility. Enzymes help you digest your food, especially if you overeat or gorge on junk food. Take 2 enzymes before each meal and take 2 more after the meal if you feel overstuffed. You can also take enzymes anytime you have digestive discomfort.
>>Defend your health by adding probiotics to your daily regimen. The probiotics acidophilus and bifidus are the "friendly" bacteria that live in your gut and are your first line of defense against a variety of illnesses including colds and flus. Probiotics keep you healthy rather than curing you after you are already sick. It sounds like that old adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," doesn't it?
>>Get up and stretch. Did you know that one of the major causes of tiredness is muscle tension and fatigue? It's true. Tight muscles that haven't been stretched out can make you feel tired before you even begin your day. At the end of your day, those same tight muscles can make a long day seem endless. So what can you do to prevent muscle fatigue? Stretch your body! Doing just 15-20 minutes of light yoga or stretching in the morning can drastically improve the oxygenation in your body as well as your overall physical stamina. Stretching is a simple investment in your health that will pay off immediately.
The new year is quickly approaching. Get started now on picking your 3 changes for the year and make this the year you create real change for healthy living.

7 Natural Solutions to Beat Colds and Flus
This is the time of year that people refer to as cold and flu season. Why does it seem like we catch colds and flus more this time of year? It has been scientifically proven that it really isn't about the colder temperatures we are exposed to in winter months. The old adage about wear your coat outside or you'll catch cold turns out to be false. Our bodies however are under more stress during cold weather as we move from heated homes and cars to freezing outdoor temperatures. We also suffer from the lack of moisture in heated environments. Viruses can enter the body through mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, and mouth. You can pick up or touch something with a virus, then touch your nose, mouth or eyes and presto, you have given the virus a way into your body.
The Immune System
Colds and flus are both viruses. When your immune system is not operating at its peak then you are susceptible to developing a cold or flu. According the "Natural Science Daily" it's your cells that catch the cold first, and that happens when the cold virus binds to a cell. Once a cell becomes infected the virus can spread by reproducing itself and infecting other cells.
Did you know that the health of your digestive tract has a direct effect on how healthy your immune system is? Most people don't realize that the majority of lymph nodes are around the digestive tract area. These protect the body from invader cells getting in through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream.
Natural killer (NK) cells are an important part of your immune response. According to a paper published in "The Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association," NK cells play an important role in neutralizing foreign invaders, including pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, and diseased cells in the blood, lymph, tissues, and organs of the human body. When NK cells come in contact with these foreign bodies, they secrete biochemicals that neutralize them. That is, of course, why they are called natural killer cells. Scientific research shows that natural foods and herbs such as blue-green algae, astragalus root, and ginseng all support and boost the activity of NK cells.
Macrophages, a type of white blood cell, also play an important role in the immune system in defending against invaders. Macrophages have to be moving and circulating throughout the body to work. Scientific research shows that certain substances stimulate your body's macrophages. Key among them is a substance found in brewer's yeast: beta 1,3 glucan. Beta 1,3 glucan is a specially extracted ingredient of brewer's yeast and is not the same as taking brewer's yeast, which will not give you the same results. Beta 1,3 glucan, taken orally, stimulates your body's innate immune system to, among other things, produce white blood cells, mobilize cells to "recognize" foreign invaders, and produce anti-microbial agents.
Colds vs. Flus
How do you know whether you have a cold or a flu? Both are caused by viruses, but cold symptoms are milder than flu symptoms. A sore throat usually kicks off cold symptoms followed by runny nose, congestion and cough. There can be a low temperature, but it is rarely over 101 degrees, and colds do not usually manifest with a fever. Cold symptoms commonly start going away after about a week. If they persist much longer, then there is a chance you have developed a sinus infection, allergies or some other condition than a common cold. Symptoms that start quickly and then see improvement after about a week indicate you probably have the common cold.
Flu symptoms, like cold symptoms, also can manifest with a sore throat, congestion, and cough but are usually also accompanied by higher grade fever, a headache, and achy muscles. Flu symptoms also show improvement after about a week, but can leave you lacking in energy and not feeling quite in tip top shape for weeks. If other symptoms persist longer than a week, you may need to consult your health care practitioner as flu can sometimes lead to other conditions such as pneumonia.
Regardless of whether you have a cold virus or a flu virus, the treatments are much the same. Antibiotics are only useful against bacterial infections and therefore will not help with colds and flus. The best treatment of course is prevention by keeping the immune system strong and allowing your body to naturally resist catching a cold or a flu when it is going around. If you do have a cold or flu, there are natural solutions that can help to relieve symptoms.
Natural Solutions to Colds and Flus
1. Get extra rest so immune cells can regenerate.
2. Water, water, water. Use water two ways. Wash hands frequently with warm soapy water for 20 30 seconds to get germs off the skin. AND drinking water is the most important ingredient for healing since you need it to flush the colds and flus out of your system
3. Eat more foods with antioxidants like bright colored fruits and vegetables. Stay away from sugary and processed foods.
4. Feed your friendly bacteria in your intestine by supplementing your diet with probiotics. Probiotics, especially acidophilus, produce substances which are antiviral and antifungal. Probiotics also support the immune system by supporting the function of the digestive system.
5. Demulcent and expectorant herbs like marshmallow, slippery elm, comfrey, mullein, and fenugreek help thin and clear out mucous. You can find most of these herbs in tincture form at your local health food store.
6. Supplement your diet with Immusun from Simplexity Health. This immune system support product contains pure, whole particle beta glucan that helps with inflammation by mobilizing white blood cells to areas of injury or inflammation. These white blood cells (macrophages) remove damaged tissue quickly before it has time to trigger more inflammation. Adding a single capsule of ImmuSun each day to your diet causes your body to more actively defend against invading germs, viruses and antigens. The ImmuSun stimulates the macrophages into action, which in turn triggers an entire chain reaction of defense mechanisms in the body.
7. Take Vitamin C and bioflavanoid supplements as they will provide potent antioxidant benefits and support healing of the lung tissue.
Prevention is always the best medicine. So if you haven't caught a cold or flu so far this winter, now is the time to start strengthening your body's immune system and getting it ready to fight off the many viruses that can lead to colds and flus.

Got Gas? Natural Solutions to Avoid It!
We all have gas and a certain amount after eating is completely normal. It is also normal for the body to release the gas. This is done either through belching or farting. On average, adults fart about 16 times a day. Each fart equals about liter of gas or more than 2 cups of shared air. A fart is a mix of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane and hydrogen sulfide. The hydrogen sulfide is what causes the unpleasant odor sometimes associated with passing gas.
Gas created by swallowed air, such as when drinking soda, usually is released through belching. One of the most common causes of farting is poor digestion. Bacteria in our intestinal tract turns undigested sugars into gas that is released by farting. Excess gas that is not released causes bloating.
Certain foods tend to produce more gas than others. This can vary for each individual and sometimes it is a combination of certain foods that produces excess gas.
Foods to Avoid to Reduce Gas
Simplexity's SBG Zymes contain natural food enzymes that can help break down fats, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. It is also microblended with 25 mg of Super Blue Green Alpha Sun, adding specific vitamins and minerals that many enzymes need for optimum ability to function. For the body to get the most out of food, the intestines must be healthy. Acidophilus plays a key role in supporting the health of the small intestine. Simplexity's probiotic Bifidus creates a favorable environment for the growth of "good bacteria" in the large intestine.
For some people, chronic or painful excess gas can be a symptom of more serious conditions including Irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer, peptic ulcer, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. If changes in diet and improving digestion dont relieve painful or chronic gas, consult your health care professional to see if you have another condition and what treatment options are available. Everyone has gas, and for most of us improving the digestive system and making some dietary changes can help keep down the amount of gas in the body which means less need to belch and fart. It's that simple.

- Vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts, and onions and beans contain a sugar that is not absorbed or digested and our intestinal bacteria turns it into gas.
- Dairy products can cause excess gas, especially for people that are sensitive to lactose.
- Foods with sugar and simple carbohydrates can cause excess gas and bloating. That includes fructose, the natural sugar found in fruits, and the ever popular high fructose corn syrup found in the majority of processed foods. Foods that have fiber, sugars, and starches create gas when they are not digested and absorbed and result in being broken down in the large intestine.
- Carbonated drinks
- Artificial sweeteners or other foods with sugar alcohol
- Eat slowly to avoid swallowing air.
- Avoid using straws for drinking as they lead to swallowing more air.
- Steam foods instead of boiling them.
- Avoid drinking during a meal, drink before eating instead to avoid losing stomach acid that helps break down foods.
- Supplement your diet with digestive enzymes and probiotics like acidophilus and bifidus

Want to stay Slim or Even Lose Weight This Winter? Simple Natural Solutions
Winter months seem especially hard months to lose weight and are often a time we gain weight. With holiday overeating, curling up inside to stay warm and reducing our activity level, or eating our favorite comfort foods to fight off depression of shorter light hours, it's no wonder the pounds stack up. The key to lose weight is to optimize calories. The more nutritious our calorie intake the less we need to take in to satisfy the body.
Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are the nutrients most food contains and each has calories. Too many calories means an increase in weight. How many calories a person needs depends on factors such as their age, height, and how physically active they are.
Men typically need between 1800 -2500 calories a day and women typically need between 1200 to 2000 calories per day. Teens need even more. A healthy diet consisting of low fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins provides the calories we need. A healthy body that is getting the nutrition it craves reduces the cravings for too many calories or those deplete of nutrients like sodas and sweets.
Diet for Weight Loss
We've all seen how diets don't work. We tend to stick with a diet for a while, see results and then watch the pounds return and oftentimes increase. With some diets the body starts to feel "starved" after a while and begins insisting that we feed it more. Other diets just become stale and limiting and we eventually drift away from them. The best diet is to stick with eating an amount of healthy nutritious foods appropriate for your age, height, physical activity level and any medical conditions you may have.
Physical Activity for Weight Loss
Another consideration when it comes to weight loss is adding how many calories we have taken in during a day and subtracting how many calories we have used up. Burning calories through physical activity or exercise is a necessary part of weight loss. If you are physically active, then you can burn off some of the calories you have eaten. Even if you don't have a regular exercise program, just finding ways to add extra movement to your day can help burn off calories. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or ride a bike whenever you can instead of driving, do your own yard work instead of hiring someone, go for a walk on your lunch break. All these types of activities can help subtract calories from your total at the end of the day.
Reduce Stress for Weight Loss
Stress is another consideration in weight loss. When we are over stressed the adrenal glands release a hormone that increases the blood sugar and allows fat to be stored. Many of us also turn to eating extra to deal with stress and the foods we often crave are high in fat, carbohydrates and sugar.
Healthy Digestive System for Weight Loss
A healthy digestive system that breaks down foods and processes the nutrients into a form the body can use is another key factor. This role primarily falls to digestive enzymes. Each of us is born with a certain supply of enzymes at birth. As we get older our internal enzyme supply is naturally depleted. One study shows that a 60 year old has 50% fewer enzymes than a 30 year old. Unless we stop the one-way-flow out of the body of enzyme energy, our digestive eliminative capacities weaken; obesity and chronic illness set in.
What can you do to stop enzyme depletion and all its symptoms? Enzyme therapy! Enzyme therapy adds enzymes back into your system faster than you deplete them, thus building up your reserve. When your body has more enzymes than it needs for just digestion, it uses the extra enzymes for healing, repair and renewal.
Natural Solutions for Winter Weight Loss
1. SUPPLEMENT NUTRTION: Supplement your diet with nutrient rich blue green algae. This can help add the nutrients your body may not be getting from foods. So many of our foods today do not have the proper nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Simplexity Essentials are a convenient way to get the nutrients of blue green algae, enzymes providing active antioxidants that fight free-radical destruction, and acidophilus and bifidus to support digestive health.
2. DRINK: Water, that is. When it's cold outside we tend to drink less water. But to move toxins and fat out of your system your body needs plenty of pure water. One simple way to get all the water you need is to drink warm water with a little lemon or sea salt in it.
3. EAT: More often. Studies have shown that eating more often (every three hours or so) can increase metabolism and reduce body fat. Read "The 3-Hour Diet: How Low-Carb Diets Make You Fat and Timing Makes You Thin" by Jorge Cruise for great guidelines.
4. GO GREEN: Super Blue Green Alpha Sun Algae and Omega Sun Algae from Simplexity have the highest chlorophyll content of any food, and are a high source of protein. Chlorophyll is essential to helping your body stay efficient, and protein helps your body build lean muscle (which burns lots of calories).
5. ENZYMES: For a natural and healthy way to keep your metabolism high and your fat content low, add enzymes to your regimen between and at meals. Enzymes help boost your metabolism. SBG Zymes from Simplexity Health contain amylase, cellulase, lipase, protease, and lactase for more efficient digestion to avoid the after-meal energy slump and contains MycoPepsin which unlike other enzymes is able to remain active in a highly acidic environment. SBG Zymes Plus contain cayenne and other substances to increase metabolism, burn fat, digest a broad spectrum of substances, and clean up waste in the body. Always take enzymes with pure, non-chlorinated water (since chlorine is one of the main culprits that depletes the body of enzymes).
6. GET CLEAN: Sometimes you just need to clean up your system to stay slim. Try a 3 to 5 day juice fast. Staying clean inside helps you stay lean outside!
So remember, balance calories in with calories out, keep to a diet of nutrient rich foods, maintain a healthy digestive system and stay physically active and you'll find a healthier, slimmer you this winter.

Is Your Pet Depressed? Natural Solutions
Yes there is such a thing as pet depression. Pets of all kinds can develop pet depression. Depression does not necessarily manifest in the same way for pets as for humans though.
Behaviors to Watch for Pet Depression
- lethargic behavior
- loss of appetite
- lack of motivation
- dull coat
- not showing normal activity level or showing changes in behavior
- urination or defecation "accidents" in the house
Some causes of pet depression include:
- moving to a new home
- death of a person or animal friend
- being around a lot of stress
- being in an unsuitable management program or job
- introduce another animal friend
- increase exercise
- spend extra playtime with your pet
- look for ways to reduce the stress in the pet's environment
- keep to a normal routine
- don't feed foods with a lot of artificial preservatives and additives
Foods with a lot of artificial preservatives and additives can create a lack of energy and cause symptoms of depression. Many of the commercial animal foods are often very low in nutrition. Did you know that many dog and cat foods contain low quality ingredients, including diseased animal meat laced with high levels of antibiotics? All pets benefit from fresh foods - it's what they would eat if they were in the wild. Even dogs and cats do well with occasional greens and salads, as well as fresh meat.
Read the label of pet food before you buy it and avoid as many of the following as possible:
- BHA, Ethoxyquin, BHT: these are chemical preservatives
- Low quality protein: corn, wheat, and soy are examples
- Fats: most fats added to pet food are indigestible
- Artificial flavors or colors
- Corn syrup or sugar: just as bad for your pet as for you
- Byproducts: these include animal beaks, hooves, and guts
Probiotics: support the balance of natural 'friendly' bacteria present in the body of all organisms (an example is Lactobacillus acidophilus). Probiotics support a healthy immune system, coat, and teeth/gums
Food Enzymes: help your pet digest his food by aiding in breaking down food into forms your pet can use (examples include protease, amylase, and lipase)
Minerals and Trace Minerals: used in almost every function of the body and are more easily assimilated than synthetic minerals By adding small amounts of these natural ingredients to your pet's food, you can boost the nutrition in your pet's food no matter what brand of food you feed. APA Blend contains a variety of micronutrients, probiotics, enzymes and antioxidants in a powder form that is easy to sprinkle on your pet's food.
Good nutrition is an important step to keeping your pet healthy and reduce the risks of pet depression. Pet food nutrition doesn't have to be complicated. Just learn to read the labels, avoid foods with a lot of harmful or artificial ingredients, and supplement with probiotics, enzymes, minerals, and trace minerals as needed.

5 Natural Solutions for Getting a Good Night's Sleep
In the equation for healthy living the recommendations usually include eating a healthy balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, exercise and getting a good night's sleep. These are general guidelines and what they mean can vary though from person to person. For example, every person needs a different amount of sleep, so what is a sufficient amount of sleep for one person may not be enough for another. You might even need different amounts of sleep on different nights depending on what's going on in your life. The quality of your sleep is also an important factor. Your quality of sleep determines how refreshed you feel when you wake up in the morning, and how much energy you have during the day.
The best way to determine how much sleep you need is to listen to your body. Pick a time when you don't have to be up at a certain time and experiment with waking up naturally instead of setting an alarm clock. See what time you wake up and how many hours you slept. Check in with how you feel with that amount of sleep, then adjust accordingly.
Sleep Deprivation and Insomnia
But what about for those who have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. According to a study published in "USA Today" only 26% of Americans claim to get a good nights sleep only a few days a month and 24% of those surveyed claim to get a good nights sleep only a few days a week. Many sources report that Americans are sleep-deprived and lacking in daily energy. Most of those Americans reach for coffee in the morning and energy drinks in the afternoon. That of course leads to the energy crash that happens in the late afternoon or evening.
Natural Solutions To Help With Sleep
Here are some natural solutions that can help if you have insomnia or other sleep problems:
1. Train for Bedtime
Start training your body as to when it is time to sleep and when it is time to get up. Pick the same time each day to awaken and avoid naps during the day. Establish a nighttime routine that cues your body to get ready for sleep. Begin dimming the lights at least an hour before bedtime, put away all work and conflict situations. If you have things you are worried about, make a list and put it away in your calendar or day planner to deal with the next day. Instead engage in something calming such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, imagery, listening to soothing music, or taking a relaxing bath.
2. Herbs
There are herbs that can help some people with sleep problems. Valerian root and chamomile are two of these. Try incorporating slowly sipping a cup of Chamomile tea into your routine of relaxing before bedtime.
3. Exercise
Regular exercise can help with sleep problems. Do not include this in your bedtime routine however as it can also act as a stimulant. Exercise should be done at least 3 hours prior to your bedtime routine. Yoga and Tai Chi are good practices that have been found to be helpful with sleep problems.
4. Watch What You Eat
Eating a late meal or heavy snack before going to bed can activate your digestive system and keep you from being able to go to sleep. On the other hand, going to bed hungry can also prevent sleep. A light bedtime snack of complex carbohydrate or dairy foods like cereal and milk can be OK for some people.
5. Algae and Probiotics
Adding some probiotics and Super Blue Green Algae to your nightly regimen can really help you recharge while you sleep. 1-2 capsules before bed of Omega Sun algae, which is the core of the algae without the cell wall, relaxes the brain and allows you to get a peaceful night's rest. Adding 2-4 capsules of Bifidus to your evening regimen can help ensure a restful sleep so you wake rested and confident. While digestive enzymes certainly help us digest our food, on a metaphysical level, they can also help us digest and "work through" the knotty problems of the day. If you're facing a difficult situation or problem and need some solutions, take 2-4 SBG Zymes before bed. Chances are that you will awaken with the needed solution!

Natural Solutions for Staying Active as You Age
Most of us would love to find a fountain of youth as a natural solution to combat aging. The good news is you can. Science is finding more evidence all the time of ways to deflect the aging process in our bodies. One of these is as simple as staying active.
Staying Active to Stay Youthful
Recent studies show evidence that Alzheimer's can actually be prevented by exercise. Regular exercise has also been found to increase life expectancy, protect against stroke and change our DNA making our muscles work more efficiently. During exercise the brain stimulates enzymes that are able to break down amyloid plaques that have been linked to Alzheimer's.
Besides staying active physically, there are studies that show that staying active mentally is important. One recent study found that staying active mentally produces lower amounts of a protein that forms beta amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's. (http://ow.ly/ewC2K)
Antioxidants to Support Staying Youthful
To stay youthful, forget about the passage of time. Instead, think about keeping your cells healthy. Antioxidants help keep your cells in peak condition.
Our bodies are made of over 75 trillion cells. These cells are under constant attack by unstable molecules called free radicals. Some of these free radical molecules are the result of natural processes in the body, while others come from the daily stresses of life, including air pollutants, smoking, alcohol, over-exertion, heavy exercise, and poor diets. Problems occur when an over abundance of free radicals exists and the body does not have enough naturally occurring antioxidants to combat them.
As your 75 trillion cells are constantly attacked by free radicals, the result is aging.
Free radicals can react with your cells' DNA and RNA, the blueprints by which your cells duplicate themselves causing heart disease, chronic pain, and other ailments related to aging.
A good way to supplement your body with antioxidants is with blue green algae. Blue green algae contains a wide range of antioxidants in the form of specific trace minerals, amino acids, vitamins and especially pigments an impressive variety of carotenes along with potent green and blue pigments. Replicated studies have shown the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of phycocyanin which is found in blue green algae. (Bruno, Edible Microalgae)
Super Sprouts and Algae from Simplexity Health gives you wheat sprouts, Super Blue Green Alpha Sun algae and red beta algae combined to supply the body with antioxidant nutrition and combat the destructive effects of free radicals.
Alpha Sun Blue Green algae contains a vast array of micronutrients that your body uses for physical well being and to support physical health.
As we age, another consideration is bone health. Calcium alone is often not enough to maintain bone health. Other important minerals are also required by the body for bone formation. OsteoSun, from Simplexity Health, has been shown in studies to increase bone mineral density significantly in subjects, by as much as 47% over a control group.
The saying you are only as old as you feel can certainly apply. Staying active both physically and mentally and giving your body antioxidant support, can help you combat the aging process and many of the health concerns that accompany it. Try out these natural solutions and start your own fountain of youth flowing.

Got Chronic Pain? Natural Solutions to Support Your Body
Are you living with chronic pain or know someone who is? Did you know 100 million people in the United States suffer from chronic pain? That's $635 billion spent in treatments and loss of workers' time. That's a lot! There is some good news though for chronic pain sufferers.
New Evidence About Chronic Pain
There is new evidence that chronic pain may not just be the result of an underlying condition. New studies are showing that chronic pain can be its own condition. After living with pain for so long, the brain can actually store the memory of it, so that even after the original disorder causing the pain is gone, the pain remains. There is some evidence that suggests chronic pain can even be genetic.
Treating Chronic Pain
Traditionally, chronic pain has been treated with medications that target inflammation or block pain. There are studies now showing that chronic pain can respond well to untraditional types of treatment including acupuncture, massage, hypnosis and that even positive thinking can make a difference.
How Simplexity Products Can Support Your Body
Simplexity Health has several products that can provide natural solutions to help support your body for optimal health and give immune system support.
Stemplex
StemPlex is a unique blend of natural ingredients including green tea extract, wild blueberry, the antioxidant amino acid carnosine, blueberry extract, and vitamin D, all of which support your body's own renewal systems. Many of the ingredients in StemPlex are antioxidants. As oxidation of iron causes rust, our bodies heal less effectively if cells are damaged by free radicals. Antioxidants are very important in promoting a healthy immune system which can aid in prevention of disease leading to chronic pain symptoms.
Super Sprouts and Algae
Super Sprouts and Algae contain a super concentration of custom-grown wheat sprouts, Super Blue Green Alpha Sun and Red beta algae. These three ingredients combined supply the body with antioxidant nutrition that may help combat the destructive effects of highly unstable, reactive molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of normal metabolism, and the human body is designed to handle a limited amount of them. When the body is subjected to various forms of stress, including emotional pressures, overexertion, environmental pollutants, and the aging process, the production of free radicals can quickly overextend those limits leaving the body vulnerable to attack and disease that can lead to chronic pain.

Leaky Gut Syndrome and Food Allergies
Leaky gut syndrome and food allergies are two of the challenges our intestinal systems face today. Both theses issues can cause a variety of symptoms from mild swelling and gas to extreme cramping, aches and pains.
A small percentage of the population has actual food allergies that include symptoms of hives, itchy eyes, difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis. A higher percentage have food intolerances or are hypersensitive to certain foods. These symptoms include fatigue, anxiety, muscle pain, gas bloating, diarrhea and headaches. This occurs mostly when food is improperly digested. It also quite often happens in conjunction with leaky gut syndrome.
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Not a lot is known about leaky gut syndrome by doctors except for its symptoms which include bloating, gas, cramps, food sensitivities and aches and pains. It is more of a category of symptoms than a diagnosis and doctors are often at a loss when it comes to finding causes and how to treat it.
Doctors believe it is possibly caused by tight junctions in the gut, that control what can pass the lining of the small intestine, not working properly and allowing substances to leak into the bloodstream. It can also be caused by some types of disease, certain drugs, radiation therapy, chronic stress, diet or food allergies.
Poor Digestion
For good digestion to occur, the stomach must have enough enzymes to process food. "Leaky gut syndrome" can let undigested proteins, carbohydrates and fats through to the blood system and cause the immune system to react to these as foreign invaders. Food allergies are also known to be linked to poor digestion. When the digestive system is not functioning properly it can lead to all the symptoms associated with leaky gut syndrome.
Natural Solutions
Lifestyle changes of eating a healthier diet and stress reduction are currently the best forms of treatment for leaky gut syndrome. Other forms of treatment may be available from your doctor if he or she can arrive at a diagnosis of the cause. At the current time however the medical profession has limited knowledge for causes.
Scientific studies have shown that algae can reduce allergic sensitivity to milk and soybean and may enhance antibodies that can protect against or reduce allergic reactions to foods such as shellfish.
AFA blue green algae, with its cartoenes and chlorophyll, is able to help cells around the intestinal wall secrete lubricating material that can help prevent the immune system from over-reacting.
Acidophilus and Bifidus along with SBG Zymes can help keep your digestive system in good working order. Acidophilus supports intestinal health by creating a favorable environment for the growth of beneficial flora and promotes the normal movement of food through the intestine. Bifidus lowers the pH of the intestine, manufactures specific B vitamins, promotes immune function, and supports the health of the large intestine. SBG Zymes contain a combination of enzymes to help break down all types of foods (including fats, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber) for improved digestion and optimal nutrition. Super Blue Green Alpha Sun provides an easily digestible natural complex that is critical for the health and vitality of tissues and cells. To get all of these in one easy, convenient packet, Simplexity Health has Essentials which contain all of these products plus an Omega Sun capsule.
So the natural way to help with your leaky gut syndrome symptoms and food intolerances is to reduce stress, eat a healthy diet and supplement that diet with Super Blue-Green Algae, acidophilus, bifidus and digestive enzymes. Your gut will be glad you did.
